Do you love to travel, but can’t get away as much as you would like? Mementos from some of our favorite trips can be the perfect inspiration for our home design. So can items that remind us of places we’ve dreamed of visiting.
Here are some chic ideas that you can incorporate into a travel-inspired design. They will stir your bon voyage spirit.
- Maps ‘n’ things: Travel decor often brings to mind interiors filled with vintage suitcases, sepia-tinted globes and old world maps. I typically stick with just one or two travel-themed accessories like an antique camera and a steamer trunk pulling double duty as a coffee table and extra storage space.
- Pick up items at your destination: If you’re fortunate enough to travel to an exciting or exotic locale , take the opportunity to pick up authentic pieces to accent your home. Don’t make the mistake of relying on luck to find the right stuff – you need a definite shopping plan before you board the plane. It’ll probably mean venturing away from the typical tourist areas, but it’ll be worth it.
- Arm yourself with a little knowledge on the history and art of the region you’re traveling to so you’ll be better able to gauge the value and authenticity of potential decor items for your home. Plus, you’ll want to skip decorating with souvenir-stand finds and go off-road shopping at out-of-the-way antique stores and local markets. Check out online resources to find the best shopping spots the locals go to for home decor and check to see if any auctions are going on while you’re in the region.
- Tell me what you’re looking for: If travelling to the region that’s driving your décor project isn’t possible, that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck when it comes to designing with authentic pieces. As a design professional, I have access to home decor, such as rugs, fabrics and major furniture pieces, from all over the world.
